Transportation from Munich Airport to Munich and within Munich

Acquiring tickets for the public transportation network:
We recommend using one of the following two apps on a smartphone. Follow the links below, or simply search for “MVV München” or “MVGO München” in the app store on your smartphone.
MVV: https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/fahrplanauskunft/mobile-auskunft-app/mvv-app/index.html
MVGO: https://www.mvg.de/services/unsere-apps/mvgo.html

It is necessary to create an account and save a payment method to buy tickets through the app. You can also buy single tickets in advance via the MVV website: https://ticketshop.mvv-muenchen.de/index.php/standardProductSale.

All of Munich is covered by Zone M, however Munich Airport (MUC) is located well outside Munich, in Zone 5 of the transit network. A ticket for Zone M alone will not suffice to reach the city (see option 3 below).

Ticket machines exist at most larger U-Bahn and train stations, including Universität, Airport, and  Hauptbahnhof/Main Station. They are also available on most tramways, but buying tickets at bus or tram stations is usually not possible.

Travel within Munich

With the exception of the visit on Saturday evening (June 21) to the Biergarten Hirschau in the Englischen Garten, all ECIEC-related events will take place within walking distance from one another and from most of the recommended hotels. For reaching Hirschau on Saturday we recommend a combination of public transit and walking.

If your plans in Munich are limited to arriving in the University area and participating in ECIEC events, purchasing two or three single short-trip tickets (€2.00 each) for reaching Hirschau will probably be sufficient. (See below on reaching the university area.)
Simply buying a single day ticket for Zone M (€9.70) might prove more convenient, however.

In the event that you need reach the Philologicum (U-Bahn Station: Universität) using public transit on a daily basis, or plan to stay longer in Munich before or after ECIEC, we recommend purchasing a weekly ticket for Zone M (€22.40), which covers virtually all of Munich proper (including the entire U-Bahn network), and all modes of transit (U-Bahn, tram, bus).

Reaching the University Area

Most of you will likely need to reach the U-Bahn Station Universität upon arrival in Munich; from there, most of the recommended hotels are located 10 minutes or less on foot away. Below are instructions for reaching Universität from the Hauptbahnhof and Munich International Airport.

From the Hauptbahnhof

With a day ticket or a weekly ticket valid for Zone M, or a single trip ticket:

Bus: exit the Hauptbahnhof on the north side (Arnulfstraße) and take Bus 58 (City Ring via Giselastraße) from the stop Hauptbahnhof Nord to Universität. Note: Bus 100 may stop nearer to your hotel, i.e. at Amalienstraße or Maxvorstadt/Sammlung Brandhorst.

U-Bahn: follow the signs for the U-Bahn towards the U2 (red line). Take the U2 (red line) to Sendlinger Tor (one stop from the Hauptbahnhof).
Change to the U6 (blue line, direction Münchner Freiheit/Kieferngarten) or U3 (orange line, direction Münchner Freiheit/Moosach) and exit at Universität.

From Munich International Airport

A Taxi from MUC to central areas of the city costs approximately €100; we therefore recommend this only if you are traveling with larger amounts of luggage or if using a train and subway would be too challenging. A trip by taxi to the university area is typically ca. 30 minutes (but up to 45–50 minutes in traffic).

Lufthansa Bus + U-Bahn
Lufthansa operates a direct bus service, departing every 20 minutes, from MUC to the U-Bahn station Nordfriedhof, which costs only €12. Tickets can purchased here: https://www.airportbus-muenchen.de/en.
From Nordfriedhof, a single ticket (or day ticket/weekly ticket for Zone M) will allow you to reach Universität. At Nordfriedhof, take the U6 in the direction of Klinikum Großhadern. Universität will be the fourth stop.
This mode of travel takes 45–60 minutes.

S-Bahn + U-Bahn
To travel by train from Zone 5 into Zone M and the University area, buying an Airport-City-Day-Ticket (€16.30) or Airport-City-Day-Group-Ticket (€30.50, for groups of two to five adults) is the best option. See the information above on acquiring tickets for the public transit network.
MUC is served by two S-Bahn (suburban train) lines, the S1 and S8. For reaching Universität, the difference to travel time is nearly negligible, but using the S8 may be slightly preferable. Travel time is approximately 50–60 minutes.

i. With the S1, change at Moosach to the U3 (orange line) and travel 10 stops to Universität.

ii. With the S8, change at Marienplatz to the U3 (orange line, direction Moosach) or U6 (blue line, direction Münchner Freiheit/Kieferngarten/Garching Forschungszentrum) and travel two stops to Universität.
